Denza Premium Brand Debuts in Europe

In a bold move to penetrate the European luxury EV market, BYD has introduced its premium sub-brand, Denza. Previously a joint venture with Mercedes-Benz, Denza is now wholly owned by BYD. The brand aims to challenge European stalwarts such as BMW and Mercedes. The launch event, held during Milan’s Design Week, showcased Denza’s flagship model, the electric Z9 GT sport wagon, boasting an impressive 1,000 horsepower. European sales are slated to begin at the end of 2025, with a hybrid version expected in early 2026. Future models, including the D9 van and potential off-road vehicles, are also in the pipeline. Initial production will take place in China, with plans to commence manufacturing in Hungary by October 2025 and a new facility in Turkey by March 2026, targeting a combined annual output of 500,000 vehicles.

Introduction of the Tai 3 Electric SUV

BYD’s sub-brand, Fang Cheng Bao, has unveiled the Tai 3, a compact electric SUV designed to offer advanced technology at an accessible price point. Comparable in size to the Tesla Model Y, the Tai 3 is equipped with BYD’s proprietary Blade battery technology, providing an estimated range of 501 kilometers on a single charge. The vehicle features a 15.6-inch central infotainment screen, a 12-inch head-up display, and an optional DJI drone system, highlighting BYD’s focus on integrating cutting-edge technology into its vehicles. The Tai 3 is expected to start at under $20,000, making it a competitive option in the compact SUV segment.

Launch of the Sealion 05 EV

Further expanding its electric SUV lineup, BYD has introduced the Sealion 05 EV, a compact crossover that embodies the company’s “Ocean Aesthetics” design philosophy. The vehicle offers a minimalist exterior with a spacious interior, featuring an 8.8-inch LCD instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Equipped with BYD’s “God’s Eye” driving assistance system, the Sealion 05 EV emphasizes safety and user-friendly technology. With a starting price of approximately $16,240, it presents an affordable option for consumers seeking an entry into the electric vehicle market.

Expansion into Switzerland

Demonstrating its commitment to European expansion, BYD has officially entered the Swiss passenger car market. The initial models available include two battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). BYD plans to establish 15 sales points in Switzerland by the end of this year, further solidifying its presence in the European market.

Strategic Focus on Hybrid Technology

In response to global market dynamics and to circumvent tariffs on all-electric vehicles in certain regions, BYD is placing increased emphasis on hybrid and extended-range vehicles. This strategic pivot allows the company to offer versatile powertrain options, catering to markets with varying infrastructure and regulatory environments. By integrating hybrid technology, BYD aims to enhance profitability and accelerate its global expansion efforts.

Ambitious Sales Targets and Market Leadership

BYD has set an ambitious goal to sell 5.5 million vehicles globally in 2025, marking a 29% increase over its 2024 total of 4.27 million units. This target reflects BYD’s aggressive international expansion, with plans to double its overseas sales to more than 800,000 vehicles in 2025. The company aims to achieve this by overcoming tariffs through local assembly and tailoring its offerings to meet diverse market demands.

Notably, BYD has surpassed Tesla in global battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales for two consecutive quarters, positioning itself as a formidable competitor in the EV market. Market researcher Counterpoint Research predicts that BYD will overtake Tesla as the global BEV leader for the first time in 2025, driven by its technological leadership and vertically integrated production model.

BYD Auto Co.’s recent initiatives reflect a comprehensive strategy to solidify its position as a leading player in the global automotive industry. Through the introduction of premium brands, innovative vehicle models, and strategic market expansions, BYD is poised to make a significant impact on the future of electric and hybrid mobility worldwide.
