  • 1908: Philip Morris & Co. is founded in New York City.
  • 1919: The iconic Philip Morris coronet logo is introduced.
  • 1972: Marlboro becomes the world’s best-selling cigarette brand.
  • 1987: Philip Morris International (PMI) is incorporated as an operating company.
  • 2001: The operations center of the company is transferred from Rye Brook, New York, to Lausanne, Switzerland.
  • 2003: Philip Morris Companies Inc. formally changes its name to the Altria Group.
  • 2008: PMI is spun off from Altria.
  • 2016: PMI declares its mission-critical transformation to become a leader in smoke-free products.
